Another Indian Book

Arvind Adiga. True to tradition within 30 pages the man makes you feel depressed & sad through the guise of so-called-humor.
why do prize winning books have to be about underbellies and sadness? Is it to perpetrate the 'true' story or is it for the sake of pseudo-intellectualism?
Now that I've kept the book down I wonder when I'll pick it up. The extract was good goading me to buy it at a crossing today afternoon for Rs50 (against my better judgment). I wonder its worth it. But for me, its definitely better than an original 375 copy.

sometimes i think it would be nice to see a shobha de-ish portrayal of our country win the Booker rather than the rats, sadhus and potbellies from malnourishment.

thats the problem with
award winning books esp indian ones. rarely have i seen a book that is written in a joyful or simplistic manner win. It almost always has to be some moving human drama or the like, or paint india with all the gloom in the world. Same for oscar awards, movies with dreary monologues have to win over others.. Poor shawshank redemption dint even get nominated..:/

Re: thats the problem with
gone are the days of logical judges who awarded sci-fi and philosophy and innovation rather than misery.
With economic downturn hopefully the focus will shift to awarding happier times, since happy times meant sad books.
