The creator obviously had the bes to hintentions in his/her mind while making it, but i dont think they ever considered the clickety-click sound they make on every opening-closing cycle. Press down - refill emerges with a satisfying click!, press the side bar, refill vanishes with an extremely satisfying..in fact thrilling CLICK! Wow! *Beam* Thats how they must have seen them. Those charming pens them!
However, impulsive-compulsive behavior is common amongst people with minds elsewhere, if I may be polite. Hence, while talking on the phone, while talking face to face, while sitting idly, while absically not using the hands, the fingers tend to move. What easier than to click a pen shut and open? clickety-clack! Till the other person goes crazy.
I thought the girl in college who found this offensive was over the edge. What I didnt realise was that I was lucky to be not sitting beside someone with that problem. In office however, its tougher than in college. You can shout at someone in college. You cant do that to your boss in office. Not with the pen, not with the constant drumming on the table.

Once your mind pinpoints the reason for discomfort (i.e. the repetitive tuneless sound) it just cannot let go of it. The sound just seems to grow, loom larger in your mind till it is difficult to concentrate on the task at hand. YOu start having fantasies...of jumping wildly and breaking the pen, the arm and neck of the colleague. Of showering sudden lethal blows on your colleague....of...
Sigh. however, you grin and bear it. You tell the other person to stop. You hope he will listen. You ask him again to stop. You play music on heaphones. You try and ignoe. And if all else fails, go out for a cup of coffee.
